NSW GREENS MP Ian Cohen today denied assaulting a woman after it emerged that police launched a probe into the allegations in January.

The NSW Upper House MP is being investigated over allegations he assaulted Donna Davis on June 2, 2006.

Greens MP Ian Cohen's ex-girlfriend claims he assaulted her.

Ms Davis, who has a business at Byron Bay on the NSW north coast and is reportedly Mr Cohen's ex-girlfriend, told officers about the alleged incident in January this year.

Mr Cohen denied the allegations today, saying they were unfair and personally devastating.
"The accusations ... are false, malicious and without foundation," he said.

"I strenuously deny all such allegations, which have been made eight months after the alleged occurrence.

"I have instructed my solicitor to bring proceedings for defamation in respect to these false accusations made to the media."

A Police statement said the investigation had been hampered by delays in speaking with witnesses.

"On January 31, a 56-year-old woman contacted Byron Bay police alleging an incident took place on June 2, 2006 where she was assaulted by a 55-year-old man whom she knew," it said.

"As a result Byron Bay detectives began an investigation into these claims.

"It initially took many months for key witnesses to come forward and allow police to interview them.
"As a result of further inquiries, additional witnesses have been identified and will be interviewed.
"While investigations into this matter continue, no further comment is able to be made."
